Constitutional Marriage Ban

Home

On November 4, 2008, Florida voters will be going to the polls, not only to elect a new President, but also to consider a constitutional amendment that would ban same-sex marriages, as well as banning civil unions, domestic partnerships, and similar rights for both straight and gay couples. Same-sex marriage has already been outlawed in Florida by its so-called, Defense of Marriage Act, so this constitutional amendment is not really about that. A yes vote would mean that we would be entrenching discrimination against gays and lesbians in the constitution, hurting their children in the process as they would be further denied the rights of civilly recognized families. Please vote NO in order to retain some of the civil rights and protections that our current domestic partners laws offer. Below is some information excerpted from thttp://www.floridaredandblue.com/. 'Marriage Protection' an unnecessary burden

Miami Herald

"By creating only one type of recognized relationship, Amendment 2 could take away existing rights and benefits from many Floridians, gay or straight. If it passes, unmarried Floridians in committed relationships -- especially seniors who may remain unmarried by choice -- could lose their ability to share healthcare coverage. They could be barred from visiting each other in emergency medical situations" - Former U.S. Rep. Jim Davis

Bill banning domestic partnerships betrays conservative values

The Salt Lake Tribune

It is mean-spirited to say that loving, committed couples who rely on each other financially should be denied access to see one another during an emergency or illness at a hospital. It is mean-spirited to deny a few dollars savings on a "family pass" to a public facility to a couple who rely on each other in every way as a committed couple; who pay taxes and contribute to their community.

True values voters should embrace any loving marriage

Sun-Sentinel

We know what this is: A hot button issue engineered to fire up religious conservatives in a presidential election year.

Our view: Reject the bigotry

Florida Today

Proposed gay marriage ban would harm Florida families and promote discrimination.

"But its intent is to harm and punish, solely on the basis of whom an individual chooses to love or live with."
